Abstract

A central problem in phylogenetics is to select a hypothesis that best describes the evolutionary history leading to the sequences in a given alignment. AnÚ and Sanderson recently proposed a method of making this decision by selecting the hypothesis that minimizes the code length for the hypothesis plus the code length for the alignment given the hypothesis. In this work, we present an improvement in the coding scheme that results in shorter codes and briefly analyze the differences in performance with the original encoding.
